A few years ago, Australis Cosmetics won my heart with their Mineral Inject lip sticks. A few years down the track, they’ve kept up their good work with the lip colours and I’ve now fallen head over heels in love with their brand, and especially with the quality of their products. Today, I put their new matte lip cream in Rio-D to the test and honestly… it leaves me speechless once again.
EDIT: I went out and bought the rest of the Australis Velourlips (except purple) and gave them another chance. Read the revised review here! 😉
Let’s start with the smell, shall we? The first thing I thought of when I picked up the this tube from Priceline was that it smelt so much like candy. Grape candy, to be exact! If anyone has ever tried grape flavoured Hi-Chews, or even grape soda.. you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s not a sickly sweet smell, which I find is always a plus when it comes to lip products.
What about the formula? It goes on smoothly and a little bit goes a loooooong way. Most matte lipsticks really dry up my lips, but because this is more of a creamy formula.. my lips don’t feel half as dry as when I use a matte lipstick. A few minutes after application it does dry up a little.
This one really stays on.. I know this because taking it off was pretty messy. You cannot just remove it with just a tissue as it just smudges on your skin and leaves a bit of a smudgy mess. It’ll take a make-up wipe, or a cotton pad laden with make up remover to get it all off. For this reason, I’d advise against kissing someone unless you’ve got a make up wipe in your handbag ready for them to use! 😉 This goes for any light coloured fabrics or surfaces… because this thing really stains.
They currently come in five colours, and you can check them all out on the Australis website. If you’re a uni student, and are a member with UNiDAYS, you can get 25% off all online purchases. I wish I remembered, because I bought this one for $9.95 AUD at a Priceline in Burwood.
Overall, I don’t have many complaints on the Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream except for maybe the fact that it is a bit drying after a while. But that’s nothing a little lip balm underneath won’t fix :). I can’t say that I’m absolutely in love with this colour because it’s still far from the colours I am used to. I think mixing this with another lip colour will take away that highlighter orange look that I can’t exactly pull off.
Australis is one of my favourite ‘drugstore’ brands, being cruelty-free and 100% Aussie. Their products are always of high quality where eyeshadows and lipsticks are always so pigmented! They also have some vegan-friendly products too, where most pharmacy brands just don’t.
I won’t be buying the other colours because they’re really ‘outside-the-box’ for me, especially the fluoro pink.
